Hand Procedures
Experiencing pain in your hand and/or fingers?
Dr. Mark Gardner offers a comprehensive exam to determine the best treatment modality for hand and/or finger pain. He is experienced in performing various procedures, including trigger finger release, carpal tunnel decompression, and Dupuytren's contracture release.
Trigger finger release
Trigger finger release is a surgical procedure that improves the ability to bend and straighten a finger by making it easier for the tendon to move. The goal of the surgery is to release the A1 pulley, which can block tendon movement. This allows the flexor tendon to glide more easily through the tendon sheath, which can help relieve a clicking or catching sensation.
What causes trigger finger?
The main cause of trigger finger is swelling and inflammation around the tendon. Without treatment, the finger may become locked in the bent position. People who repetitively grip or squeeze are more likely to develop trigger finger, as are people with diabetes.
What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome? What are the symptoms?
Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a painful condition that occurs when the median nerve is compressed in the wrist as it passes through the carpal tunnel. The median nerve provides feeling and movement to the thumb, index, middle, and part of the ring finger. Symptoms usually start slowly and can include:
-
Numbness or tingling in the fingers, especially the thumb and index and middle fingers
-
Fingers that feel swollen and cold
-
Weakness when gripping objects
-
Pain or numbness in one or both hands
-
"Pins and needles" feeling in the fingers
-
Waking up and feeling the need to shake out your hand or wrist
Carpal tunnel decompression
Carpal tunnel decompression, also known as carpal tunnel release or carpal tunnel surgery, is a surgical procedure that relieves pressure on the median nerve in the wrist by cutting the transverse carpal ligament. Dr. Gardner makes a small incision in the palm of the hand near the wrist, cuts the ligament, and sometimes removes some tissue around the nerve.
What is Dupuytren's Contracture?
Dupuytren's contracture is a disease that causes the skin in the palm of the hand to thicken, which can lead to a thick band that pulls the fingers into the palm or causes them to contract, limiting mobility.
Dupuytren's Contracture release
During Dupuytren's contracture release surgery, Dr. Gardner makes an incision in the hand and removes the thickened tissue, allowing for improved movement of the hand by freeing up the skin and joints and ultimately increasing finger mobility.
